At the Interior Chemical Dependency Office we are committed to addressing the whole person; their biological, psychological and social/environmental self. As such, we provide individual and group counselling for any patient of the clinic. Our clinic counsellor, Brittany, is proficient in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Solution-Focused Therapy, Person-Centered Therapy, and applies a trauma-informed approach. Brittany has a Bachelor of Arts degree with a double-major in Psychology and Sociology, as well as has valuable experiential knowledge. She is currently working towards her Registered Professional Counsellor (RPC) designation.
Behavioral treatments help patients engage in the treatment process, modify their attitudes and behaviors related to drug abuse, and increase healthy life skills. These treatments also enhance the effectiveness of medications and help people stay in treatment longer. Treatment for drug abuse and addiction can be delivered in many different settings using a variety of behavioral approaches, such as 12 step programs and SMART Recovery. Group and individual counselling is a vital part of treatment at the Interior Chemical Dependency Office. Patients are strongly encouraged to participate in these therapies.
Interior Chemical Dependency Office Inc. offers Group Medical Visits throughout the week to our patients that are not able to be scheduled for an appointment that week due to space or who would simply like to attend the group visit. The Group Medical Visits are with your ICDO physician, the clinic counsellor, and an administrative staff member. In the group we start with a discussion regarding a topic chosen by the counsellor, typically regarding addiction education and/or various aspects of the recovery process, such as coping with urges, relapse prevention, and techniques to better handle problematic behaviours or co-existing mental health concerns such as anxiety and/or depression. Near the end of the visit the physician will provide the patients with their prescriptions.
Patients of the clinic can be scheduled for these Group Medical Visits through reception. The visits typically last approximately one hour.
Many people find counselling beneficial for navigating the waters of recovery. Counselling can help you cope with urges, triggers and cravings, provide insight and feedback into thoughts and behaviours, as well as allow you to voice and work through thoughts and emotions. Counselling can also be provided to help learn to better manage co-existing mental health concerns such as anxiety and/or depression.
Patients of the clinic can book appointments with our addictions counsellor for one-to-one counselling with reception. Counselling appointments are typically one hour long and can be made for the same day as your appointment with your physician for convenience.
SMART Recovery meetings at our clinic take place every Tuesday at 1pm and Thursday at 5pm. These meetings last approximately one hour, are free to attend, and open to everyone.
SMART stands for Self-Management and Recovery Training, as SMART Recovery is a self-help program for ending addictive behaviors through abstinence based on science and humanistic values. It is a program based on:
- Personal Responsibility
- Proven Principles of Change
- Unconditional Self-Acceptance
In small group settings, we talk freely, sharing ideas, support and experience. We learn proven and practical self-management and recovery skills through discussions and self-help activities. We learn specific methods for each task of The SMART Recovery® 4-Point Program™:
- enhance and maintain motivation to not use
- cope with urges
- manage thoughts, feelings and behavior
- balance momentary and enduring satisfactions
